EPA Summer Cooling Tips
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) just released some useful cooling tips for every budget this summer. A typical household spends almost 20 percent of its utility bill on cooling, so take some initiative to cool your home in an energy friendly and economically smart way.
No-Cost Tips
- Program your thermostat around your family’s schedule so your cooling system isn’t cooling an empty house.
- Change your HVAC system air filter every month. A dirty air filter slows air flow and makes the system use more energy to keep you cool.
- Use fans to supplement air conditioning and distribute the cool air efficiently.
- Use heavy curtains and shades to prevent sunlight from overheating the inside of your home.
Low-Cost Tips
- Remember to have your HVAC system serviced annually to ensure that it is running at maximum efficiency.
- Swap incandescent bulbs with more energy efficient options. Energy-star qualified lighting is choice.
- Seal your air ducts… Almost 20% of air moving through your duct system is lost due to leaks and poor connections.
Other Tips
- When buying a room air conditioner, make sure it is one that has earned the EPA’s energy star.
- Add insulation in your attic to keep the cool air in.
- Hire a contracter to seal and insulate the interior ductwork of your home.
