Home Size Declining, Efficiency is a Factor

The size of U.S. family homes completed in 2009 has declined to a nationwide average of 2,438 square feet. This trend is in stark contrast to the gradually increasing size of homes over the past 3 decades. The National Association of Homebuilders attributes a desire to keep energy costs low as one reason for the drop in home size. The increasing attention to energy efficiency in the public conscious is likely to cause this trend to continue. The public is becoming more aware that energy savings in turn produce monetary savings, and it simply costs lest to heat/cool a smaller house.
