The last GE factory in the United States manufacturing incandescent bulbs will be closing its doors later this month. Most incandescent bulbs will be banned in the US by 2014, and other countries across the globe are enacting similar legislation.

Short for Light Emitting Diodes, LED lights may soon replace compact fluorescent (CFLs) bulbs. More energy and cost efficient, these LEDs are seeing a rise in popularity at major retailers.

LED manufacturer Cree claims that its model CR6 down light bulb can last up to 20 years (based on 6 hours of daily use)! That’s about 5 times as much use as you would see out of the average CFL.
